[WARNING: This book does contain slurs for transgender people and gay people]This book does not hesitate to tell you what it's about. From the dedication and the Baldwin quote that precede the text, it's clear this work is a love letter to the relationships between fathers and sons, be they long, short, complicated, or simple. As I am neither a father nor a son, I considered myself forewarned and proceeded with my expectations set at what I thought was a reasonable level.What I did not anticipate was a story about that particular Father and His sons. While seeing through Benji's eyes does turn this into a slog at some points, I actually came away rather impressed that I could read a book that was explicitly drawing from the Christian mythos without feeling like I'd attended a sermon. Yes, there is talk of God (a LOT of talk of God), and yes, there is mention of sin, but I didn't necessarily get the sense that the man upstairs or the failings of humanity were those your average evangelist would immediately recognize. As for the warning above, I do get that not everyone uses the proper terms when referring to certain groups of people and policing your characters' language too much can lead to dialog feeling stilted and unnatural, but it's still kind of rough to be reading along in an LGBTQ+-positive story and get hit with a slur to the face. It's tough enough when it comes from a bad guy, but when it's said by someone described over and over as "great," well...it's nice to be aware it's coming. I will never give another book 5 stars after this. This is it for me. I think this book caused me to have a crisis of identity. And then after it broke me apart, it put me back together again. I have never been so enraptured in a book. It reminds me of The Shack, in its grief. In its hope. In its Love. I want to immediately tell everyone to read it because it will change their life and in the same breath warn them to never read it because it hurt so much. Ugh. Need nap.Running thoughts, which was basically just me crying a lot:I’m not ready for this. I’m not. I’m just not. I don’t know where my Kleenex are and my kid is still awake and it’s not even dinner time yet. I should wait until tonight. I’m not going to wait. But I should.Oh cool, I’ve already started crying. My husband is like, “I’m watching football, can this wait?” (He didn’t say that, I’d murder him).I feel like after this I will have to go and rereview every other book that I’ve ever read so that they won’t have as high of a review as this one.4% into this book and I’m already sobbing.Sometimes when I’m reading LGBT books that are set a few years in the past I think, “this is what it must have been like for queer people back then” (back then, like it’s the dark ages). And then it hits me that some people still feel that way. Some people are still really prejudiced. Bigoted. Hurtful. I never cared either way and I sometimes forget that other people don’t also feel like that.I probably would have been less surprised by the events of The Bones Beneath My Skin if I had read this book first. But I’m glad that I read it in this order.God, I love how he does this scene. The back and forth between past and present.This is the part of the story where I rolled over in the middle of the night to sob against my husband.“You are tested because if you aren’t, how could you know what you believe in?” - This sentence will haunt me for years.Oh. My. God. (Is that too ironic to say right now?)The Boxcar Children. <3I think this book could change the world. I think...so many things. I think it’s sad that some people who will need this book the most will never read it.
